Background
The Educational Psychology Service aims to:

• help create conditions which enable children and young people to achieve their full potential, particularly where they are experiencing problems.
• work together with parents, teachers, and other partners to prevent or overcome such problems.
• promote understanding and advancement of learning and teaching strategies through engaging in authority-wide strategies and innovations.
• conduct research which meets rigorous quality and ethical standards.

Every school has a visiting named psychologist, and advice is also provided to Children’s Hearing, education management and partnership agencies. Educational psychologists in the service participate in a structured professional development programme.

Each educational psychologist has commitments in all of the following areas:

• generic: supporting individual children, families and teachers, through collaborative involvement in schools.
• specialist: supporting individual children, families and teachers, through collaborative involvement in special schools and special units.
• research: supporting schools and the authority, through involvement in research and in the development of learning and teaching initiatives.
• continuous professional development: ensuring they keep up to date with latest professional developments.
