The award allows young people to become involved in planning, delivering and evaluating their work as well as their peers, to enhance future practice which is a process that is seen to be the very essence of quality physical education.
The Benefits
The programme has been developed due to its potential to develop individuals in a positive way. These benefits may be:
- Personal development - helping people reach their full potential
- Stepping stone to employment - providing young people with a qualification to assist them get started
- Developing leadership skills - teaching young people the ability to organise activities, to lead, motivate and communicate with groups
- Reducing youth crime - diverting young people from the possibility to becoming involved in youth crime through involvement in positive activities
- Volunteering in communities - encouraging young to organise safe sporting activities in their neighbourhood
Course Delivery
The course is delivered in 2 modules, A and B. Module A covers the basics of sports leadership, this should allow the young people to effectively complete Module B which is practical based. The fundamentals of Module A are:
- Organisational skills
- Communication skills
- Health and fitness
- Fair play in sport
- The role of the official
- Opportunities in sports and recreation
Module B requires the young people deliver a minimum of 1 hour sporting activity and can be spread over a period of time. The young person must plan and deliver the sessions and will be supervised by a qualified coach, teacher or youth worker.
