Shawl Collection
Paisley holds a rare position in the history of woven textiles, and The Paisley Shawl Collection cared for by Renfrewshire Arts and Museums Service is a Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland.

The exotically patterned, delicate woollen shawls were originally from Kashmir but European manufacturers began to produce cheaper versions to meet demand. The shawl went out of fashion in the 1870s, but the pattern that had decorated them is still popular today.

In 2002, Paisley Museum was invited to become one of the leading partners in a Scottish Executive-funded project to make information available about Scotland's rich heritage in the textile industries. The Scottish Textile Heritage Online website was the result of the work of that partnership.

Hand loom weaving was a traditional industry in Renfrewshire throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. At Paisley museum research is carried out on traditional textile design and technology in the Weaving Gallery.

You can see several of the various stages of the weaving process, and the loom working. The weaver can answer queries about the history of handloom weaving in the county and about textiles in general.

Paisley pattern
Did you know that although the woven shawls, and their patterns, are known as 'Paisley', these shawls did not originate in Paisley - and Paisley wasn’t even the only place in Europe where they were produced!

A perfect illustration of our social history - the costume collection contains women’s, children’s and men’s costume, uniforms and occupational clothing and foreign costumes. It also contains household textiles, trades union and other banners, dolls’ clothes and in fact anything textile that was used or created in Renfrewshire!

Renfrewshire Arts and Museums care for a wealth of treasures, from Ancient Egyptian artefacts to reminders of our industrial past and our natural heritage.

Curators for all the collections are based at Paisley Museum, please arrange an appointment if you have a specific request.
