The exotically patterned, delicate woollen shawls were originally from Kashmir but European manufacturers began to produce cheaper versions to meet demand. The shawl went out of fashion in the 1870s, but the pattern that had decorated them is still popular today.
In 2002, Paisley Museum was invited to become one of the leading partners in a Scottish Executive-funded project to make information available about Scotland's rich heritage in the textile industries. The Scottish Textile Heritage Online website was the result of the work of that partnership.

A perfect illustration of our social history - the costume collection contains women’s, children’s and men’s costume, uniforms and occupational clothing and foreign costumes. It also contains household textiles, trades union and other banners, dolls’ clothes and in fact anything textile that was used or created in Renfrewshire!
Renfrewshire Arts and Museums care for a wealth of treasures, from Ancient Egyptian artefacts to reminders of our industrial past and our natural heritage.
