Renfrew Community Museum location map
The Brown Institute dates from 1903 and was presented to the town by Andrew Brown who was provost of Renfrew in the 19th century.
The building originally housed a library, reading room and a panelled billiard room.
Over the years the building has been home to the burgh band and a careers office until Renfrew community museum was opened in the building in 1997 to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Renfrew as a Royal Burgh.
Getting there
The venue is easily accessible via public transport. You can plan your journey simply by using the Traveline Scotland website. Admission to Renfrew Community Museum is free.
Displays:
include ship models and a variety of domestic material drawn from the collection that Renfrew Burgh Council put together for the Museum.
One of our favourite displays is the model of a typical tenement 'The Doll's House' in which the various rooms cast light on different aspects of tenement living.
Other displays give information about
- The Blytheswood estate
- The Burgh's relationship with the River Clyde
- The engineering industry, and
- The history of Renfrew Airport (the precursor to Glasgow Airport)
Exhibitions and displays
Occasionally the main display is put into store to allow short term exhibitions to take its place, please check the 'what's on' section. Only a small proportion of our collections can be on display at any one time, if there is something you'd like to arrange to see please contact our curatorial team.
