Renfrewshire Council has launched a public consultation about our proposals to develop Renfrew Town Hall, as part of the town centre regeneration programme.
Information on the proposals is contained on this web page. You’ll find a message from Derek Mackay, Leader of Renfrewshire Council, and outlines of our proposals for Renfrew Town Hall and Renfrew Museum.
As we develop more detailed proposals these will be available on this website, so please check back regularly. We’ll also mount a display in Renfrew Town Hall as we develop ideas. If you'd like to be kept up to date with information about the project, please see the next steps section below.

Message from the Leader of Renfrewshire Council
The pride in Renfrew Town Hall, as the centrepiece of the town is appreciated by all. We are driving forward a proposal to revitalise the building for future generations.
Our proposals will not just refresh the facility, open up new space and provide better access, we will also include a community museum twice the size of what we currently have in the town, displaying the fascinating heritage of Renfrew.
Our town hall enhancements will benefit local people and attract visitors to enjoy what the town has to offer.

Renfrew Town Hall
The Town Hall will be refurbished to maintain its role as one of the town’s most important social venues. The hall will continue to have three function rooms and a main hall but the proposals will see all of the spaces refurbished, with better access for people with mobility restrictions.
The space in the front of the building will be developed into a public foyer, with comfortable seating, refreshments available, wifi access, information services and a museum gift shop. The spaces will provide great views down High Street. We hope that the citizens of Renfrewshire will enjoy using this space to relax, meet friends, read or learn about the town and enjoy the architecture of this impressive town hall.

Renfrew Registrars’ service
The registrar’s service will continue to be within the town hall, with all the current services continuing but with a new marriage suite, and closer links to the town hall’s function suites.

Renfrew Museum
Renfrew has a unique heritage and has played an important role in the development of Renfrewshire and Scotland. Renfrewshire Council proposes to develop the museum to tell more of these stories in more stimulating ways – both for the benefit of local people and to attract more visitors to enjoy what the town has to offer.
We propose to move the museum in to the town hall and to provide much more space for exhibits to be displayed in a more attractive environment by building an extension on the south side of the hall.
The new museum will have a wide range of stories to draw from, in displays which will be refreshed regularly. These stories will include:
- The story of Renfrew’s development
- Renfrew’s role as the cradle of the Stewarts
- The link with the Clyde and the maritime industry
- The link with the airport and the aero industry
Next steps
As we develop more detailed proposals these will be available on this website, so please check back regularly. We’ll also mount a display in Renfrew Town Hall as we develop ideas.
We value your views and opinions, we recently carried out a survey of Renfrew residents to canvas opinions on our proposals (closed Friday 13 June).
We’ll consider all submissions before producing more detailed proposals. These proposals then go to Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery for their opinion and as part of an application for funding. If this is successful we would hope to start the building work in Summer 2009.
