A Man's A man For A' That, by Robert Burns.
This poem is written in the Ayrshire dialect and has been set to music. It was sung at the opening of the Scottish parliament in 1999. It expresses the idea that a person's character and the way he lives his life is more important than having money. The poem was written in 1795, inspired in part by the French Revolution.

Robert Burns is known as Scotland's National Bard. He was born on 25 January 1759 in the village of Alloway, two miles south of Ayr.
His first collection of poetry "Poems chiefly in the Scottish Dialect" was published in 1786.
He died in 1796 as a result of rheumatic fever leaving behind a large archive of poems and songs as well as a growing family. After his death he became even more famous than in his lifetime.
His life is celebrated every year about 25 January at what is now known as a Burns Supper. Haggis, potatoes and turnip are served and recitations and singing of his works are performed along with a toast to his memory.
Books about Burns and his poetry can be found in the library catalogue and you can find more information here.
