'Active Schools' is an initiative to encourage physical activity and sport for all young people at school in Renfrewshire.

It is designed to motivate young people to be active, healthy and to adopt a healthy lifestyle into adulthood.

In February 2003, Active Schools was identified as a key element of the Scottish Government's drive to get more Scots more active. The Scottish Government has since developed a range of partnerships and tasks to take this work forward. A fundamental aim of Active Schools is to give school-aged children the tools, motivation and opportunities to be more active and for these opportunities to be available before, during and after school, and in the wider community.

Renfrewshire Active Schools
This is a partnership driven initiative between Sportscotland and Renfrewshire Council's education and leisure services. A team have been appointed with responsibility to put in place and drive forward a range of planned activities in both school and community settings. The objectives of the initiative are: In August 2011 1,500 young athletes from around the world will gather in Lanarkshire when it hosts the International Children's Games. If you are interested in a unique opportunity for volunteering you can get more information from the Volunteer for International Children's Games - Lanarkshire 2011.

Active Schools are running additional new clubs for children and young people.
In partnership with St. Mirren Football Club and Johnstone Blackbelt Academy, a Football club and a Tae Kwon Do club has been set up for children with a physical disability. In partnership with the Scottish Hockey Union, 3 community hockey clubs are running in 3 separate venues within Renfrewshire. If you are interested in any of these clubs you can get more information from New Sports Clubs for Children and Young People
