There are positions for 40 councillors on Renfrewshire Council. However, following the recent resignation of Derek Mackay from Ward 1, the current composition of the council involves 39 councillors. The position vacated by Derek Mackay will be filled in this May's council election.

The political make up of the council is 16 SNP (Group Leader Councillor Brian Lawson), 19 Labour (Group Leader Councillor Iain McMillan), 3 Liberal Democrat (Group Leader Councillor Eileen McCartin), 1 Conservative.
