The local authority has a range of responsibilities in relation to community councils within the area:
- it is responsible for ensuring that a Scheme for Community Councils is prepared which sets out things like their boundaries, constitutions, finance and so on. In addition the Scheme sets out the arrangements between the local authority and community councils for keeping each other informed about matters of mutual interest;
- it makes contributions towards the expenses of community councils;
- it provides equipment to community councils and arranges training for community council members
Community councils have an important role to play in acting as the local voice for their community and ensuring that the Council is as well informed as possible on local opinion on a range of issues before the Council makes its decisions.
Community councils have an important role to play and can make a worthwhile contribution to local government.
