Education Appeals Board
Home > Services > Community and living > Life Events > Registration Service
If you disagree with a decision by Renfrewshire Council to exclude your child from school, or to refuse your placing request for the school of your choice,
you can ask to have your case referred to an appeals board.
You should appeal in writing to the Director of Education and Leisure Services. You may choose to explain why you think the school or the council acted incorrectly in excluding your child or refusing a placing request.
You will be invited to appear before the appeals board where you and the education service's representative can state your case. The appeals board is made up of councillors and representatives from local attendance councils.
The authority's case is often led by a solicitor and you may decide that you would like to instruct a solicitor to put your case, but this is not essential. Hearings are formal, but every effort will be made to put you at ease and to explain the procedures prior to the hearing. When the hearing ends, the board will consider all the evidence and decide whether to uphold or reject your appeal. You will receive a letter within 3 or 4 days notifying you of the appeals board decision and the reasons why. If your appeal is refused, you will be informed of your right to appeal to the Sheriff.
