Marriage notice forms
By law, both parties in a civil or religious marriage need to send marriage notice forms (Form M10) to the registrar for the district in which the marriage is to take place. Blank forms can be collected from any registration office in Scotland or downloaded from the Registrar General for Scotland's website.
You must lodge your marriage notice form no earlier than three months before the date of marriage and no later than 15 days before the date of marriage.
Ceremony forms
You must lodge civil marriage ceremony forms three months before your marriage date and religious marriage ceremony forms between four and six weeks before your marriage date.

Witness forms
You must complete a witness form for all types of marriage ceremony. Complete the form and send it to the registration office when you lodge your marriage notice forms. Download a witness form here:

Civil marriage -booking
- Civil marriages may take place Monday to Sunday
- You can book up to one year in advance, and you must pay a non-refundable booking fee
- For marriages planned within three calendar months we must receive all relevant documents and fees when making the booking
- Civil marriages may now be conducted at approved venues of your choice (outwith Registration offices) upon application. Contact your local registration office or Licensing Section on 0141 840 3498 for further details.
Civil marriage information sheets
For civil ceremonies only, you must complete a civil marriage information sheet to let the registrar know about any special requirements you want on your marriage day. Send this form to the registration office when you lodge your marriage notice forms.

What other documentation will I need to take when I hand my marriage notice forms to the registrar?
- both bride and bridegroom's birth certificates
- if you were born in Britain after 1983, the registrar will also require to see your British passport
- if you have been married before and the marriage was dissolved, the registrar will also have to see a certificate of divorce or annulment. A decree of divorce granted outwith Scotland must be absolute or final. A decree nisi in not acceptable.
- if you are a foreign national, you may need to produce a certificate of no impediment.
All your documentation must be translated into English. Please note that we do not accept photocopies.
If you are a foreign national who is subject to immigration control, you'll have to meet specific requirements before the registrar will accept notice of marriage. For further information please contact any registration office in Scotland or visit the Home Office website.
