Key role of community councils
Home > Services > Community and living > Community councils
Some of the key roles of community councils:
- Positively support local government and establish close, constructive relationships with their local authority, with their local councillors and with other organisations in their areas.
- Develop a wide range of contacts with both public and private sector agencies, particularly to communicate local views. For instance, statutory utilities such as the suppliers of water, gas and electricity; and bodies with an interest in local amenity issues (for example, Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland, Carts Greenspace, housing associations).
- Actively seek the views, opinions and aspirations of the full cross-section of the community and be able to demonstrate that steps have been taken to consult the local community when appropriate, and in all cases be sure, as far as possible, that the views they express are representative of the communities they serve.
- A consultative role in planning applications, liquor licensing and community planning. Community councils have been successful too, in attracting funding for local projects and events in their areas.
