What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade guarantees fair prices for third world producers and gives power back to both producers and consumers. Producers get fair wages, good working conditions, help with product development and marketing. Consumers are given the chance to make a difference by buying Fairtrade products whenever they can. Fairtrade products include things like tea, coffee, chocolate, fruit, flowers, wine, clothes and even footballs!

How does it benefit farmers?

Purchasing Fairtrade products has a hugely beneficial impact on the lives of third world farmers. A number of farmers say that it would be impossible to continue farming without Fairtrade.

Jennipher Wattaka
Jennipher Wattaka is a member of Nasufwa Growers Co-operative Society. It is one of six co-operative societies which are affiliated to Gumutindo Co-op, and its 570 members produce a total of around 100 tonnes of coffee each year.

Jennipher says: "As a woman, being involved with Fairtrade is very helpful. They transport the coffee by lorry so we don’t have to carry it on our backs. We understand the coffee business now, and Fairtrade has taught us how to improve the quality of our coffee."

Fairtrade in Renfrewshire

"There's an increasing acceptance that public organisations have to take a leading role on this issue. Working together as a community and a council, Renfrewshire can play its part in helping third world producers increase their control over their own future, have a fair and just return for their work and enjoy decent living and working conditions."
Council leader Derek Mackay, chair of Renfrewshire Fairtrade steering group

On 8 November 2007, Renfrewshire Council approved an action plan to enable all of Renfrewshire to be accredited as a Fairtrade area. A steering group has been established with the aim of making Renfrewshire a Fairtrade Zone.

The steering group has published a guide to Fairtrade in Renfrewshire, letting you know more about who is involved in the campaign to make Renfrewshire a Fairtrade Zone, and where you can go to buy Fairtrade products.
