As part of the Institute of Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation’s continued professional development and commitment to the training and development of apprentices within the plumbing industry, Mr Tony Brunton, the National President of the Institute recently visited Reid Kerr College’s plumbing workshops and new Gas training/assessment facilities.
The Institute has, for many years, been at the forefront of training and development for plumbing apprentices and the President’s theme for this year has been “ The Year of the Young”. A high focus on new and innovative ways of involving and including young people undertaking vocational training courses has been central to the theme.
After observing Reid Kerr Lecturers Robert Hart and Derek Swan delivering a workshop practice lesson, Tony asked students about their experiences during the completion of their practical activities. He was very impressed to learn that a fully equipped resource room supplemented the workshop practice area and that there was ready access to the Internet for all students. He emphasised the need for staff to be able to communicate using various media in order to be effective with young people today.
After touring the new Renfrew North building at Reid Kerr, Tony met with Principal Joe Mooney and commented, “I am very impressed with the new Teaching Building and the many changes to the plumbing workshops. I came to Reid Kerr College thinking I would be able to bring forward new teaching methods using new IT technology only to find that innovation and change seems to be at the forefront of learning and teaching at Reid Kerr and that lecturers and students are really switched on to new learning initiatives – excellent!”
Before leaving Tony was invited to deliver a presentation to the staff and plumbing students. After an excellent presentation Senior Lecturer, Craig Stevenson, thanked Tony on behalf of the staff and students. He said “I am delighted that Tony has given us, in his year as National President, his support, professional expertise and advice and am really grateful that he found time from his extremely busy schedule to visit us at Reid Kerr. I look forward to working with the Institute and firmly believe that we can further develop our partnership in the years to come.”
