Renfrewshire roadshow promotes Mental Health Awareness Week

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2006 > October

Social work, health board and mental health organisations in Renfrewshire are teaming up to organise a roadshow to improve awareness of mental health and well-being.

The roadshow at locations in Paisley, Renfrew and Linwood is part of Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place from 9 to 13 October.

Organisations including Renfrewshire Council, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Renfrewshire Community Health Initiative (RCHI) have joined together to stage a series of events and advice sessions.

"It's estimated that one in four Scots will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives," said Councillor Tommy Williams, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Community and Family Care Policy Board and also a member of Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership.

"Clearly where there are problems such as dementia or depression, specialist help is available. But there are a whole range of mental health issues associated with promoting wellbeing. That can involve helping people deal better with the pressures or challenges they face in their daily lives. Access to the right advice can help prevent mental ill-health. Often people don't know how to go about getting fairly simple health and lifestyle tips which could bring them lasting benefits.

"With that in mind, the roadshow is very much about getting the message across of promoting mental wellbeing in a fun and informative way. We'd urge people to come along, see what's on offer and use what advice is relevant to them. No appointment is necessary and there's lots of help and information on offer from a wide range of agencies."

Activities range from advice on exercise, diet, talking and positive activity to health assessments including blood pressure checks and Indian head massages.
