Taxi drivers in Renfrewshire have been warned that they risk having their licences suspended if there continue to be problems over taking passengers arriving at Glasgow Airport on short journeys.

Two taxi drivers have had their licences suspended by Renfrewshire's regulatory functions board.

The board heard evidence that passengers had endured rudeness or verbal abuse simply for requesting journeys from Glasgow Airport to Paisley and Johnstone.

Andrew Slaven, 39, from Elderslie had his licence suspended for three months and John Anderson, 45, from Glasgow had his licence suspended until the end of March. Both drivers have the right of appeal to the Sheriff Court.

"There was clear evidence of passengers not being dealt with in a professional manner simply because they had asked for a journey that wasn't deemed a lucrative enough fare by the taxi drivers," said Councillor John McDowell, convener of Renfrewshire's regulatory functions board.

"The board will not tolerate passengers at the airport being inconvenienced or made to feel uncomfortable in this way. We don't want a minority of taxi drivers damaging the reputation of the trade. These suspensions are a clear signal that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"I'd also urge any other passengers who feel that they have had a similar experience to come forward and we'll investigate their compaint."
