11 Renfrewshire school children will be heading to The Scottish Disability Sports’ Sportshall Athletic Championships on 29 February in Stirling.

The youngsters were part of a group of 94 Renfrewshire children who took part in the Renfrewshire Sportshall Athletics Championships (Additional Support Needs) last week.

The day involved indoor athletics track and field events for the three categories of additional needs: physical disability, learning disability and visual impairment.

The event, run by Renfrewshire Active Schools Team, brought local kids together for a day of athletics competition and fun.

The team heading to the national event, run by Scottish Disability Sport are:

Michael McPhee, Castlehead High School

Ross Patterson, Castlehead High School

Kyle Finn, St Benedicts High School

Alistair McDonald, Linwood High School

Steven Coutts, Kersland School

Declan Wardrope, Mary Russell School

Mason McDuff, Mary Russell School

Ross Simpson, Clippens School

Laura Mitchell, Kersland School

Andrew Blades, Clippens School

Adam Busby, Kersland School

Councillor Susan McDonald, Renfrewshire Council's Sports Champion, said: "This was a wonderful opportunity for local children, with additional support needs, to come together and enjoy a fun and competitive day of sport while developing their skills in athletics at the same time.

“The team will now go on to compete in the National Championships at the end of the month and I’m sure they’ll do well. Renfrewshire came fourth last year in the national event and our Active Schools Team is really looking forward to taking local children to compete this year.”

The 94 children who take part in last week’s event at Linwood Sports Centre were from primary and secondary schools across Renfrewshire. A full list of winners from the day can be found below.
