Provost Celia Lawson, Maureen Hill, Cameron Price and Jackie Storrar
Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson was joined recently by singer and radio host, Jackie Storrar, to launch the search for the winners of next year’s revamped Provost’s Community Awards.

The Provost’s Community Awards will reach their 11th anniversary in 2009 and to celebrate Provost Lawson has introduced two new categories: the Spirit of Fairtrade Award and the Arts and Culture Award.

The changes have been brought about to give recognition to an even wider section of the community.

Provost Lawson said: “The Community Awards have always been a wonderful way to recognise the amazing stories and achievements of everyday people living here in Renfrewshire. This year we have decided to build on that tradition and expand it to include those who have made an outstanding achievement in the fields of art and culture and promoting the Fairtrade cause.

“I’m sure we can all think of someone who deserves to be nominated for an award whether it is a relative, friend, colleague or neighbour and all you need to do is fill in a form.”

The new Spirit of Fairtrade Award, sponsored by the Piazza Shopping Centre, has been introduced to support the council’s commitment to raising the profile of Fairtrade in Renfrewshire.

Nominees could be a local business outlet or a charity which sells and promotes Fairtrade, or even an individual or group who actively promote Fairtrade.

Maureen Hill, Piazza Centre Manager, said: “We’re delighted to sponsor the Spirit of Fairtrade Award. At the Piazza, we pride ourselves on being at the heart of the Paisley community, and this award further demonstrates our support of Renfrewshire’s bid to become a Fairtrade county.

“We’ve also been involved with the Provost’s Community Awards for several years now, so it’s fantastic to be able to sponsor an award for a cause that is close to our heart.”

The other new category this year is the Arts and Culture Award, sponsored by Acre Industrial and Cleaning Services. This award is open to any individual or group, of any age, who have demonstrated commitment to the arts and or culture, such as music, art, photography.

Jim Price, Managing Director of Acre, said: “We have sponsored the Provost’s Community Awards for several years and it is always a great celebration of local people’s achievements. We are thrilled to be sponsoring the new Arts and Culture Award which will open the awards out to an even wider section of the community and recognise the creative talent here in Renfrewshire.”

Popular radio host and recording artist, Jackie Storrar, will host the 2009 Provost’s Community Awards. Jackie has performed in over 42 countries and is currently nominated for the best female artist award at the British Country Music Awards. The former Smooth Radio presenter now has a country show on CMR National.

The categories for the Provost’s Community Awards are: This is your chance to recognise special people. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and you can even nominate them on the Provost's Awards page. Please take some time to show your appreciation.

Nominations should be restricted to one category. However, at the judge’s discretion a nomination may be moved from one category to another.
