The opening of the £11.1 million school marks the latest phase of Renfrewshire Council’s £100 million PPP investment in local schools.
Linwood High currently has 467 pupils and 41 staff led by Head Teacher Keith Hasson.
The original Linwood High was opened in 1965 to meet the increasing pupil population arising from the growing community, linked to the nearby car manufacturing plant and steelworks.
The new Linwood High building has been built on the same site as its predecessor. Along with the benefits of the latest design and construction techniques, there is improved access and a better feeling of space and light inside the school.
There is also a central social space which is becoming the hub of the school. Sport and fitness are catered for by a large games hall, an impressive fitness suite and dance studios and an external ‘golden grit’ pitch.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “Through Curriculum for Excellence, we want all schools in Scotland to offer excellent teaching and an inspirational environment with which to learn.
“The ambitious school building programme which Renfrewshire is undertaking will help to deliver this for children in Renfrewshire. The facilities offered by the new Linwood High will be of great benefit to both pupils and teachers, while providing enhanced facilities for the wider local community.”
Councillor Lorraine Cameron, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education Policy Board, said: “This impressive new facility will enable the school to deliver a wide range of educational and leisure opportunities and also build on its already strong links with the community.”
Keith Hasson, Head Teacher of Linwood High, said: “Staff and pupils are delighted with their fine new school building and have settled into it very quickly and easily. We all enjoy the comfortable welcoming surroundings, the fresh and bright appearance of the school and in particular, the light that floods into the building. We’re looking forward with eager anticipation to using the excellent facilities and state of the art technology in the years ahead."
David Broad is General Manager of the Renfrewshire Schools Partnership, the private venture company which is responsible for the construction and management of Renfrewshire Council’s £100 million schools PPP programme.
He said: “Renfrewshire Council can be justifiably proud of this facility, creating as it does a bright and comfortable environment for teaching and learning. Educational advisers, architects and interior designers have combined to achieve a building which meets all the needs of the curriculum. Carillion Building has paid attention to detail in the finishes and AMEY Local Government will maintain the school to high standards of cleanliness and provide catering which meets healthy eating standards thereby assisting the wellbeing of pupils.”
