Renfrewshire Council urges more local people to consider adoption

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2008 > November

As part of National Adoption Week (10–14 November), Renfrewshire Council is urging local residents to consider changing a child's life by adopting.

Renfrewshire Council looks after more than 300 children, of all ages, whose parents, for a variety of reasons, can no longer provide the care that they need.

Many of these children have faced difficult circumstances in their lives but an adoptive parent can make all the difference and see them thrive under the stability provided by a permanent family home.

Councillor Eileen McCartin, convener of Renfrewshire Council's community and family care policy board, said: "In so many ways, an adoptive parent can make a real difference in a child's life but we know that deciding to adopt is not something people undertake lightly. We have a number of specialist social workers on hand to offer advice and guide people through the process.

"If adoption is something you have considered and you would like to take your interest further, we can offer a variety of advice and support so you are well informed about making a decision. Prospective adoptive parents will be given the chance to speak to people currently adopting and can take part in a series of preparation groups."

The council's fostering and adoption team has prepared an information guide which you can read at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk. You can also call 0141 842 5158/59 for an informal chat with a member of the team.
