Brand new childcare course at Reid Kerr College

Home > News and Events > News - recent releases > Reid Kerr

A brand new course starts at Reid Kerr College this year for anyone interested in working with children and young people, beginning in September 2008.

The National Progression Award (NPA) in playwork and childcare is a qualification for people interested in working within a variety of childcare environments, and students can come along to study this course full-time for one year.

Davina Coupar, senior lecturer in childcare at Reid Kerr College, said: "This brand new qualification would be an ideal course for school leavers with Intermediate 1 or 2 standard grades as the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) have approved this course as a suitable qualification for registering as a support worker within a childcare setting."

"It's an ideal first qualification for anyone leaving school, studying related subjects and wanting to top up their qualification, or even anyone working as a playworker, nanny or childcare assistant who doesn't already have a childcare qualification."

The NPA qualification covers all the general knowledge required for working in this field and students also have the opportunity to take additional units of study including supporting children with additional support needs, working in a holiday playscheme and working as a nanny. These optional units, along with the placement element included in the course, can provide successful students with a more specialist qualification on leaving college and looking for specific employment.

For more information about studying this National Progression Award, accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), please contact Student Services on 0800 052 7343 or log on to the Reid Kerr website.
