A group of hospitality students from Reid Kerr College recently returned from a successful trip to Boston USA, the trip was the final stage of a year's preparation and fund raising through their enterprise studies. This enabled the hospitality management students to undertake work placements in three of the largest hotels in the city named, The InterContinental, Jury's, and The Sheraton.
Bespoke working programmes were prepared for the students in consultation with the human resource managers in each of the hotels and included the students' preferred areas of work and the opportunity to experience the managing of a large quality hotel in a busy city. During the placements the students were also privileged to attend management meetings, undertake supervisory duties and inspections and shadow management and supervisors in all their daily duties.
Lecturers Carol Gaffney and Margaret Baillie accompanied the students on their trip. Carol said, "All the hard work involved in fund-raising and organising the programme has paid off and the students will take with them not only valuable work experience, knowledge and skills that will assist them in their future studies and careers but valuable life skills, contacts and friendships for the future."
The hotels were negotiated as a result of a preparatory visit and help from Scottish Enterprise through the Scottish Council for the Development of Industry (SCDI) in Boston. For information about studying hospitality at Reid Kerr College, call 0800 052 7343.
