World Book Day 2006

Renfrewshire Council is celebrating World Book Day (Thursday 2 March) by holding a host of special events including a stock amnesty. Readers will be given the opportunity on this day to hand back any overdue books, CDs and DVDs, no matter how old, to their local library free of charge.

Most libraries will also be holding special story times for local schools and nurseries on the 2nd, and adult readers will be able to take part in the Mystery Book event, where they can borrow a surprise read.

In addition to the book amnesty, library staff will be out and about in the local community ‘spreading the word’. They will be hosting a stall at the Piazza Shopping Centre in Paisley and handing out special postcards which allow readers to recommend their favourite book to a friend, at health centres, schools and community centres.

Following on from World Book Day, local bestselling author Christopher Brookmyre will appear at Paisley Central Library on Wednesday 8th March and acclaimed Scottish poet Gerry Cambridge, will appear at the Todholm Children’s Book Festival on the 10th March.

The libraries will also be launching a new leaflet entitled ‘Books We Love’, which will use recommendations from readers and staff to introduce borrowers to a wide range of exciting new titles. Borrowers will also be given the chance to win a £20 book token in special competitions. They will be asked to recognise two famous Scottish novels from clues, which they can research using the library services’ computers.

Councillor Glen, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Lifelong Learning and Work Policy Board, said: “There is so much going on at Renfrewshire libraries during the World Book Day and the Children’s Book Festival celebrations. We will have activities to tempt both the old and the young to come along, from appearances by famous authors such as Christopher Brookmyre to competitions. Our libraries are designed to be as welcoming and interesting as possible, with computers and a range of the latest book titles on offer. We would therefore encourage everyone to visit their local library during this week and take advantage of our overdue charges’ amnesty.”
