What is emergency planning?

When an emergency occurs, as they do somewhere in the country surprisingly frequently, the emergency services (Fire, Police, Ambulance or Coastguard) deal with it quickly and efficiently. These can include:

Normally local authorities do not get involved in such incidents.

It is when a major emergency takes place that is beyond the capacity of the emergency services to deal with unaided that the local authority needs to activate their emergency plans to support the emergency services.
