Renfrewshire Council recently hosted the areas’ first Teenage Book Awards.
The Teenage Book Awards, which recognise the top authors and books enjoyed by teenagers, was the idea of Renfrewshire’s school librarians.
The school librarians identified a short list of books and hosted review groups with over a hundred secondary pupils from Renfrewshire schools to select the overall winner Bali Rai for his book ‘Rani and Sukh’. Renfrewshire’s Provost Burns presented Bali Rai with a special engraved glass vase at the award ceremony attended by the pupils and librarians involved in the awards at Paisley Town Hall last Tuesday (21st March).
The other authors shortlisted for the prize were ‘Unique’ by Alison Allen-Grey, ‘Boy2Girl’ by Terence Blacker, ‘Kissing the Rain’ by Kevin Brooks, and ‘Skaars’ by Catherine Forde. Provost Burns awarded each of the runners up with commemorative picture frames.
Provost Ronnie Burns, said: “I am thrilled and proud of the fact that the young people of Renfrewshire, along with the help of the school librarians, have introduced this new award to Renfrewshire. It is encouraging to see so many young people involved and excited about books. I am sure this award will become an annual event and make its mark as one of the main fixtures in the Renfrewshire and literacy calendar.”
He added his support to those short listed: “I would again like to offer my congratulations to Bali Rai for his book ‘Rani and Sukh’ and to the runner up authors for their outstanding pieces of work which were well deserving of being shortlisted for this award.”
Prior to the awards ceremony authors, Kevin Brooks visited Gryffe High School, Cathy Forde visited Park Mains High and Bali Rai visited Paisley Grammar School for question and answer sessions with the pupils.
