Renfrewshire education chiefs have said that the exam results obtained by over 4,000 Renfrewshire pupils are "very encouraging."
Among the highlights, standard grade passes in English and Maths continued at the highest level for three years. Fifth year pupils sustained the same good standards in higher exams shown in 2006. Fifth year pupils also performed better at standard grade or equivalent than in previous years.
There was a marginal fall in S4 pupils achieving standard grades but Renfrewshire’s position was in line with the Scotland-wide figures which showed an overall decrease in the number of passes at standard grade.
John Rooney, Renfrewshire Council’s director of education and leisure services, said: "The performance of our fifth year pupils at higher grade was particularly pleasing. In general, we have maintained our performance across a range of indicators.
"In 2007, as in 2006, 94% of our fourth year pupils achieved a pass in English and Maths which reflects the commitment of our schools to teaching essential numeracy and literacy skills.
"There was a 1% reduction in the percentage of S4 pupils achieving five or more passes at standard grade or equivalent. Certainly that’s something we’ll be looking at. However, it’s important to point out that Renfrewshire’s position is consistent with the picture across Scotland which showed an overall reduction in the number of passes at standard grade."
Mr Rooney added: "The current figures also don’t yet fully reflect the full achievement of Renfrewshire pupils, some of whom attend college as part of their school activity."
Education bosses also pointed out that the figures for exam results are ‘pre-appeal’. A more accurate picture will emerge when the final results are available in the next few months after appeals are concluded.
