Renfrewshire exam performance is “very encouraging”

Education chiefs in Renfrewshire have said that the achievement of pupils in gaining standard, higher and advanced higher passes was "very encouraging".

Councillor Lorraine Cameron, convener of Renfrewshire Council's education policy board, said: "The initial assessment of this year's provisional exam results is very encouraging for Renfrewshire schools and pupils. Figures show that compared to previous years, by the end of sixth year, more pupils left school with more standard grades, highers and advanced highers. Equally, we have maintained our performance in relation to passes in standard grade English and Maths with 94% of our pupils achieving an award. For the third year running, there has been a slight gain in the percentage of our pupils in 5th year gaining 3 or more highers. We maintained our performance in relation to the percentage of 5th year pupils who gained 5 or more highers."

John Rooney, Renfrewshire Council's director of education and leisure services, said: "Early analysis of this year's examination results shows that Renfrewshire has maintained or improved our performance across a range of indicators. We are particularly pleased with our pupils' overall performance by the end of S6, which includes an increase in performance in advanced highers. I'd like to congratulate all the pupils who sat exams this year and also the staff in our schools who do a fantastic job in supporting and encouraging them."

Mr Rooney added that the exam figures issued so far are 'pre-appeal'. He said: "The full picture will be available over the next few months once all the appeals have been heard. It's also important to recognise that these figures do not reflect the full achievements of our pupils, some of whom gain experience and develop skills through vocational training and award schemes such as City and Guilds, ASDAN and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards."
