Outline plans for new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre approved

Home > Services > Council and government > Council information, performance and statistics > News - release archive

Andy Kerr, Minister for Health and Community Care, today (Monday 22 January), visited Renfrew Health Centre and announced the approval by the Scottish Executive of the outline business case for the new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre.

During the visit, the Minister was taken on a short tour of the existing Renfrew Health Centre and introduced to some of the staff involved in taking forward plans for the new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre.

The new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre will bring health services provided by the existing Renfrew Health Centre and local social work services together under one roof.

The Minister also had the opportunity to view initial plans and technical drawings of the new Centre that will provide a wide range of services. These include minor surgery, physiotherapy, podiatry (foot care) services, health visitor and district nursing teams, social work and home care services.

It will also provide accommodation for a number of patient and carer support groups, community groups and voluntary organisations.

It is proposed that the new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre will be built on a site that lies between Renfrew Town Centre and the Braehead development.

Health Minister Andy Kerr said: "I am delighted that we have taken an important step forward in establishing the new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre.

"The outline business case has now been approved by the Executive, and the project remains on track for construction to begin in late 2007.

"The Centre will be able to provide faster, more convenient and more comprehensive services in modern facilities. I have no doubt that this will prove of enormous health benefit to the local community."

David Leese, Director of the Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership (CHP) on behalf of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “The approval of the outline business case means we can now develop detailed plans and designs for a larger, purpose-built Centre that will enable us to provide a wider range of services in a modern and attractive environment.”

Councillor Tommy Williams, Renfrewshire Council added: “The development of the new Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre is great news for the people of Renfrew and the surrounding areas.

“It demonstrates our commitment to the area and investment in its people and our commitment to improving the working conditions for our social work staff who continue to do a wonderful job.

“By bringing together health and social work services together under one roof we will be able to deliver a better service and make social work service more accessible to the local community.

“It will also provide facilities that are fit for the 21st century and meet the changing needs of the community.”
