Preparation for the move
Home > Services > Community and Living > Life Events > Moving House
Before you move you should take time to plan:
- Make arrangements with a removal company or reserve a rental van. Information about removal companies is available from the British Association of Removers.
- Cancel deliveries such as newspapers and milk.
- Arrange to have utilities cancelled or moved to your new address. Investigate what companies provide utilities to your new home and provide the best deal.
- Arrange with the Royal Mail to redirect mail to your new home.
- When you have your moving date start informing people of your new address. This might include your doctor, dentist, the Council, banks, Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), motor insurance company and breakdown service, credit card and hire purchase companies, and benefits office (if collecting benefits). You could inform your family and friends of your new address by getting cards printed with your new address and phone number.
- Contact TV Licensing in order to transfer your licence to your new address, by visiting the TV Licensing website or calling 0844 800 6737/5870. If you want to change your address online, make sure you have your licence details to hand.
- Close to your moving date you can start your packing, defrosting your freezer and fridge, arranging for family and/or friends to assist with your move, making arrangements for your children and pets to be looked after during the move and so on.
