The winners of the 4th annual Renfrewshire Libraries National Poetry Day Competition were announced at a special prize giving ceremony on Tuesday 16 January at Paisley Central Library.

Morag Smith and Derek Bell with prize winners Myles Clunie, Marc Doran. Jenifer Wilson, Chelsea Clayton and Julie McCarthy.
The competition which was open to all P5 pupils across Renfrewshire attracted 169 entries. The children were asked to write poems about their identity, following the official British National Poetry Day in October which celebrated ‘Identity’. The pupils could base their competition entries on everything to do with identity, from things that made them feel special, to the places they live and their families.

Morag Smith, Renfrewshire Council’s Literature Development Worker, has picked five winners from the entries. She said: “We were overwhelmed with the high standard of poems submitted this year by the P5 pupils. The five winning poems selected show great originality and imagination. It was a difficult job to short list just five winners from the great range of entries we got, so I would like to thank every pupil that entered for their hard work and excellent poetry.

“The pupils really enjoy taking part in this competition and it is a great way of getting primary pupils to read, write and enjoy poetry in all its forms.”

The 5 wining pupils were Myles Clunie from Arkleston Primary in Renfew, Jenifer Wilson from Wallace Primary in Elderslie, Chelsea Clayton from Lochwinnoch Primary, Julie McCarthy from St Fillan’s Primary in Houston and Marc Doran from East Fulton Primary in Linwood.

Derek Bell, Community Learning and Information Manager, presented each of the winners with a £10 book token.
