Reid Kerr students will be at the cutting edge of languages, perfecting their skills with the recent installation of a new state of the art language lab. Learners now have the opportunity to improve their language skills using the new facility that has been installed as part of the brand new teaching block. The lab was officially launched on 8th June with students from all over the world joining in the celebration.
Reid Kerr students, both international and Scottish, will use this facility, which provides language solutions to help teachers and students benefit from live interaction using leading IT technology in the classroom.
Reid Kerr is the first college in Scotland to have installed a language laboratory of this calibre. The lab features a central control booth and 20 fully interactive computer stations, allowing learners all to work at their own pace.

Senior Lecturer, Sheena Kay said: “In addition to the traditional listening tasks, this language lab provides facilities for watching video or DVD excerpts as well as digital TV and radio, or there is an option for simulated telephone calls. A recent English language (ESOL) lesson gave learners the opportunity to watch and listen to live coverage of the solar eclipse in Turkey. Language learners often worry about pronunciation and the lab really helps with this too. At the touch of a button the teacher is on hand to give advice and encouragement. Learners can also work on interactive grammar activities, using specialist CD ROMs, sponsored by Cambridge University Press.”
The language laboratory company, SANAKO have, in partnership with Reid Kerr College, allowed students to install a ‘mini’ version of the lab on their home computers. This lets learners continue their studies at any time they want by downloading the software and lessons on to special USB memory sticks.
Students enjoy using the new facility. Joseph from Glasgow is learning French and said, “I like the lab as it is easy to use and accessing websites makes learning the language more interesting.”
Song Li from China said, "I really like computers and I like that you can see bits of TV with real Scottish language. It helps me with my life in Scotland to find out more about the way people say things. I like being able to practise on my own because I don’t have to worry about making mistakes and I can call the teacher any time."
