Gryffe High refurbishment begins

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2006 > August

Work has begun on a major refurbishment programme at Gryffe High School in Houston.

The start of work has been delayed for a few weeks but council chiefs in Renfrewshire stressed that the cause of the delay was "a planning objection which has now been resolved" and that there are "no difficulties with the overall financing or construction programme."

The programme will see the refurbishment of the school building, construction of three extensions, and the installation of a synthetic playing field which will be delivered under a separate planning application.

The refurbishment work had been due to start several weeks ago with a completion date of Easter 2006. However, a planning objection from Scottish Water led to a delay in signing the building contract. A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: "Although the objection has been withdrawn, it had to be formally reported to a recent meeting of the Council's Planning and Development Policy Board. That was done and the contract for the refurbishment work has since been signed and building work has now started.

The refurbishment of the main building at Gryffe High is now scheduled to be completed by 27 April, 2007 in time for next year's exams. The extensions will be completed by 11 May, 2007.

During the period of the refurbishment work at Gryffe High, staff and pupils will transfer to the vacated St Cuthbert's building in Johnstone. Work is well underway to provide additional bus bays, car parking and classroom accommodation as well as modifications to the existing building.

Those works at the former St Cuthbert's are being carried out as part of a separate contract and are due for completion before pupils return after next year's summer holidays in August, 2007.
