A group of Marketing students at Reid Kerr College have just become the first candidates to complete the Chartered Institute of Marketing: Professional Certificate in Marketing at the College. Reid Kerr was awarded Chartered Institute of Marketing Accredited Centre status two years ago and these five students were the first group to begin the programme and successfully complete the Certificate.
Anita Osborne, Head of Business and Management at Reid Kerr said, “CIM qualifications are internationally renowned and recognised, and we’re delighted that our first group of students has now completed the Professional Certificate.”
The students, who studied on an evening class basis, have taken between 18 months and 2 years to complete the programme. Christine Lucas from Glasgow started the programme in 2005 and since then has completed all four modules, which make up the qualification. Christine, who already has a degree in biochemistry, hopes the CIM qualification will help her forge a new career. She said, “I hope to use the knowledge and experience I’ve gained on this course to find a position in marketing or to do some consultancy work.”
A new intake of CIM students will start at Reid Kerr in September, and in addition to the Professional Certificate, the College is also offering the 15 week Introductory Certificate in Marketing Programme, which is ideal for people with little or no previous marketing experience.
Lynn Bonnar from Greenock who works for Arthur Taylor Consultants Ltd in Glasgow, completed the CIM Introductory Certificate at Reid Kerr two years ago and then moved on to the Professional Certificate. She commented, “The Introductory course gave me a basic grounding in the principles of Marketing, and I think it was very helpful when I started the Professional Certificate.”
The Professional Certificate is assessed through a combination of exams and assignments, Reid Kerr lecturer Angus Ferguson thinks the balance is just about right. Angus commented, “Two of the four modules are assessed by exams and the other two are assessed by assignments. The prospect of sitting exams can be quite nerve wracking, especially for students who haven’t sat formal examinations for some time, but I think students appreciate that the exams are an essential part of ensuring the quality and reputation of the qualification.”
Lynn Bonnar added, “I think the combination of exams and assignments works well. The exams are more concerned with the theoretical side of Marketing, while the assignments allow you to see how marketing theory can be put in to practice. The assignments are designed to let you use examples from your own company and allow you to reflect on your own work experience.”
