First Aid off to a Tee

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2008 > May

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the UK and approximately 70% of all cases happen out of hospital. Two private clubs in Paisley have been improving the First Aid services offered to their members, following the completion of a recent training course delivered by Reid Kerr College in Paisley. Paisley Golf Club have introduced the provision of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine onto their premises and staff from the David Lloyd Leisure Club in Renfrew completed the same training as part of their ongoing commitment to providing first aid and life saving training at their club.

Paisley Golf Club is one of the first Golf Clubs in Renfrewshire to introduce life saving training and equipment to its staff and the Club has just taken delivery of their AED machine this month. John Hillis, the Secretary/Manager of Paisley Golf Club said, “In the Golf Club environment, more and more senior members are playing the game and consequently spending time at the club.

We believe that we need to prepare for any emergency and if a member or visitor suffers cardiac arrest we want to provide as much help as quickly as possible. Making the commitment to provide staff training and life saving equipment at the Club is a major step forward.”

John McMillan, Operations Manager at the David Lloyd Club said, “The ½ day training programme delivered by the College met all of our needs. It was important to us that a broad range of staff from all levels completed this course and Reid Kerr was able to deliver the training in-house at the Club, allowing us to involve a large group of staff.”

Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Anne Usher added, “With the increased emphasis on Health & Safety in the workplace, and the commitment of companies and individuals to make workplaces safe, deployment of this type of equipment can potentially save the life of someone in cardiac arrest. The defibrillator is very easy to use. By following voice prompts the machine tells the operator exactly what to do and will not charge up unless the casualty's heart has gone into arrest.”
