Karen McAvoy, Renfrewshire council's recently appointed Deal Me In project co-ordinator, has beaten off fierce competition to be named as Scottish Enterprise’s Modern Apprentice of the Year.
Karen's dedication to learning on the job saw her study for SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) and enrol in the business and IT degree programme at the Paisley campus of the University of West of Scotland. Now, in her new position co-ordinating the 'Deal Me In' project, Karen helps others to get onto the first rung of the career ladder.
Karen said, "The modern apprenticeship programme gave me a way into Renfrewshire council and the chance to prove myself. Since starting my apprenticeship in November 2004 I have achieved an SVQ 3 in business administration which has helped me both in terms of building my confidence and my career progression.
"I've moved from a clerical assistant post within economic development to a senior clerical officer post. Now I co-ordinate a project called 'Deal Me In' where I now have the opportunity to help other people find a career in Renfrewshire council.
"The support I received from Joyce McLean and my colleagues in economic development was great and gave me the confidence and guidance to complete the course. I hope people can see from my achievements that the modern apprenticeship programme works. I'm so pleased with my career development that I've convinced my sister to do a modern apprenticeship with the council too!"
Karen's award made it a double success for the council's modern apprentice programme after its co-ordinator, Joyce McLean, received a 'highly commended' award at the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) Champion of the Year awards. Joyce was praised for the "genuine and inspiring way she dedicates herself to the modern apprentices at such a pivotal stage in their careers".
Derek Mackay, leader of Renfrewshire council, added, "I am delighted to see our modern apprentice programme achieve such wonderful external recognition. It is another clear indication that Renfrewshire Council is committed to developing all its employees and that we provide an excellent environment for individual achievement."
David Martin, Renfrewshire council's chief executive, said, "I'd like to congratulate Karen and Joyce on what is a fantastic achievement for them personally, but also for Renfrewshire council. To have our modern apprentice programme recognised twice in the same year, by two separate organisations, indicates the strength of the programme and the apprentices in it, which will ensure that we continue to have the best employees for the future."
