Football’s newest derby match has ended in victory for a BAA Glasgow Airport team over a Renfrewshire Council select.
The match was played on the artificial pitch at Ferguslie sports centre and ended in a 5-2 win for the airport team.
The match was watched by a crowd of around 200 people. They were kept entertained not just by the game but by the running commentary delivered in his own inimitable style by Radio Clyde broadcaster Bob Smith, who also works for Renfrewshire Council's education and leisure services.
Renfrewshire Council leader Derek Mackay managed the council select team and said: "To be fair to our side, the average age of the council team was at least 10 years older than our opponents. I think that fitness advantage told as the game went on. That's my story and I’m sticking to it!
"Seriously, the match was great fun. It was particularly encouraging to see many youngsters watching the game and taking part. That’s what we're working to encourage in Renfrewshire and it was great to see that in practice. I'd like to congratulate everyone who took part in the game."
Derek Provan, customer service director at Glasgow Airport, said: "The programme of sports activities was attended by over 500 youngsters during the week and we were pleased to have some of them playing in this game. BAA Glasgow Airport is committed to helping support the community and we were delighted with the level of interest and participation here. Lastly, I'd like to congratulate our team on their victory and the quality of football played."
Tom Burns, goalkeeper with the council team and head of development in its finance department, was named 'Man of the Match'.
