A challenge match between teams representing BAA Glasgow airport and Renfrewshire Council will be the highlight of a youth sports programme taking place in Renfrewshire later this month.

Derek Mackay and Gordon Dewar discuss tactics with Gus McPherson
BAA Glasgow Airport is sponsoring a programme of free sport and activities for youngsters aged 8 to 18 between October 16 and 19. The programme, which includes football as well as skateboarding, trampolining, cycling, netball and arts and crafts, has been organised by Renfrewshire Council’s youth services.

Some of the youngsters taking part in the sports programme will play in the challenge match between the teams representing Renfrewshire council and BAA Glasgow airport.

The council's team will also include Gus McPherson and Andy Millen, manager and assistant manager of Saint Mirren, and will be managed by council leader Derek Mackay.

"As a council, we are committed to giving young people the chance to develop their interest in a wide range of sporting and arts activities," said Councillor Mackay. "The October programme of events is very much part of that. I'm sure that youngsters involved in this challenge match will enjoy that aspect as well, particularly playing alongside Gus and Andy who will be invaluable members of the council's team – especially as some of my fellow councillors will be trying to recapture the long lost glories of their youth."

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow airport, said: "We are delighted to be sponsoring this week-long programme of events in partnership with Renfrewshire Council. The airport has a long association with sport and young people in Renfrewshire, having supported events like this for almost a decade.

"Events such as this provide an opportunity to promote inclusiveness, team work and community spirit – the same core values that are at the heart of our approach as a business rooted in Renfrewshire."

St Mirren manager Gus McPherson said: "Although he's new to football management, as a politician Councillor Mackay is at least used to dealing with left and right wingers. For my part, St Mirren have a strong record of community involvement and we're happy to take part in a programme which sets out to get young people actively involved in sport."

The challenge match between BAA Glasgow airport and Renfrewshire Council takes place on the synthetic pitch at Ferguslie sports centre on Friday October 19 at 3pm.
