Local youngsters can compete for a gold medal without travelling to the Beijing Olympics this summer thanks to Renfrewshire Libraries.
Young people are being encouraged to go for gold by teaming up with Renfrewshire Libraries to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge over the school holidays.
The challenge is simple - read six books during the summer holidays, through the local library. Children will be given a special Team Read membership pack and a set of incentives to collect as they read, with a certificate and medal for those who successfully complete the challenge.
A whole range of activities will be provided to spur children on to the finish line. Staff at local libraries will be on hand to act as team coaches and there will be special themed activities. An interactive Team Read website will also be launched to link children with top authors and illustrators, while giving them space to talk about their favourite books and share reading ideas.
The Team Read will be launched in Renfrewshire on Saturday 28 June. Anyone interested in finding out more can visit their local library or visit the libraries section of this website. It is free to join Renfrewshire libraries.
Councillor Eileen McCartin, convener of Renfrewshire Council's community and family care policy board, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way of getting children reading during the summer holidays. Last year, almost 500 young people in Renfrewshire took part and this year we hope the team will be even bigger."
