Top marks for St Andrew’s Academy

A leading Renfrewshire school has been given top marks by government inspectors.

The report of HMIe (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of education) singled out a number of key strengths at St Andrew's Academy.

These included:

The school, which has over 1,100 pupils, was inspected in November 2007.

Tony Quinn, head teacher of St Andrew's Academy, said: "I am very pleased that the inspectors' report highlighted many major strengths of the school."

"It's particularly pleasing that the inspectors praised the Catholic ethos of St Andrew's and also found our pupils were courteous, well-behaved and welcoming."

St Andrew's was praised on a wide range of teaching and pupil achievement, and also for strong links with the community and partner organisations.

Particular praise was given for the school's success in integrating young people from a range of cultures. Pupils had also participated in fundraising events which enhanced their awareness of global citizenship. Strong links had been established with a school in Malawi.

In its academic achievement, St Andrew's scored higher than 20 comparable schools. Overall attainment at almost all levels was on or above the national average.

Head teacher Tony Quinn was found to have "provided the school with good leadership" and he was "highly regarded by parents, pupils and most of the teachers." Leadership across the school was also good.

John Rooney, Renfrewshire Council’s director of education and leisure services, said: "This report recognises and endorses the significant efforts of all those involved with St Andrew's Academy."

"I am confident that staff, pupils and parents will take pride in their achievement and that the school will continue to improve outcomes for the young people there."
