Councillor Marie McGurk with Emily Irwin
Eight-year-old Emily Irwin has designed the winning picture which will feature on road safety calendars in classrooms across Renfrewshire.

The Moorpark Primary pupil's poster, bearing the message 'Be Aware of Your Surroundings', was selected as the overall winner in Renfrewshire Council's annual Road Safety Classroom Calendar Competition.

Emily was presented with her £50 prize and the Road Safety Classroom Calendar Cup at a special awards ceremony in Paisley Town Hall. Her school will hold the cup for one year.

Gold, silver and bronze prizes were also awarded to entries in each of the six age categories.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Environment and Infrastructure Policy Board, presented the awards.

She said: "Road safety is an extremely serious subject and this annual competition is a great way of getting young people to think about this. Emily's poster is fantastic and really gets the message across so it is perfect for displaying in every classroom in Renfrewshire.

"I'd also like to congratulations to all the winners and entrants this year as the standard was really high."
