Picture postcards point the way for foreign tourists

Father and daughter, Juan and Paola Marco from Bilbao, Spain, with the road safety postcards
Throughout the 2008 tourist season, all tourist information centres in the West of Scotland will be offering free picture postcards to help keep foreign drivers safe and legal on our roads.

The postcards, which have been produced by the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership, show a scenic view on one side and a number of essential tips for safe driving on the other.

Partnership manager, Gladys Cadden, said: "We all know that driving in a different country can be a bit stressful and confusing. These cards are intended to give foreign drivers an easy-to-read reminder of important information about driving on our roads. As far as possible, we have used symbols to assist those with a limited understanding of English."

The Safety Camera Partnership initiative is being supported by VisitScotland, local councils and Strathclyde Police.

Iain Close, head of visitor services at VisitScotland, commented: "We're delighted to support this campaign through our network of tourist information centres. In our most recent Visitor Experience survey, 71% of international visitors identified touring Scotland as the main focus of their holiday. Our industry therefore has a major responsibility to ensure that car-touring visitors are inspired, relaxed and confident on our roads, in order that they stay safe and stay longer."

Every year in Strathclyde, the police and the other emergency services are called on to attend serious road crashes involving tourists.

Chief Inspector David Kilcullen, head of Road Policing Specialist Services, said: "Many thousands of visitors from other countries travel on our roads every year to experience the magnificent scenery and many other attractions we have on offer. Safety on these roads is a crucial issue for everyone and we believe it is important to encourage drivers from abroad to keep some basic points in mind as they make the most of their holiday. As the card says: 'Relax, take care and enjoy your drive'."

The cards come in two picture versions – one of the Rest and Be Thankful, and the other of Ailsa Craig and the Ayrshire coast.
