An £80,000 repairs programme has been launched by Renfrewshire Council to repair and upgrade pavements in the town centre which had previously been in private ownership.
Over the next month, the council will be resurfacing pavements at several key town centre locations. Once that work is completed, the council will formally take over the pavements and make sure that they are properly maintained in the long-term.
Among the locations where pavements are resurfaced are:
- Causeyside Street
- Johnstone Street
- George Place
- High Street
- Lonend and Gordon Street
- Old Sneddon Street
- Silk Street
- Stow Street
- Weir Street
The work is being carried out as the latest stage of the continuing Paisley Town Centre Action Plan, the partnership programme which is working to improve the economy and environment of Paisley.
Renfrewshire Council leader Derek Mackay, who chairs the Paisley Vision Board, said: "There have been long-standing problems with the condition of some pavements in the town centre which for historic legal reasons were in private ownership – usually by the owners of the adjoining shops."
"This work will remove tripping hazards and poor quality pavement surfaces. It also forms part of the partnership programme to improve the town centre and improve the general environment."
"There is also the potential for another phase of similar improvements in the coming financial year. In any case, we've made good progress on what was a long-running problem."
Councillor Mackay added: "This £80,000 investment is in addition to the extra £750,000 already committed in this year's council budget to maintain roads and pavements, which will also make an impact in improving the physical environment of our towns."
