Provost Lawson with winning piper
Paisley's first ever pipe band competition held on Saturday 24 July has been hailed a success after thousands of visitors turned out to see the massed pipes and drums of nine bands parade through the town before launching into their skirling skirmish in County Square.

Home grown talent secured a shelf-load of silverware at the competition with the Paisley Pipe Band winning the Paisley Vision Board Trophy for the best juvenile band in the Street Competition. The band also took first prize in Grade 3 and secured the Matt Connell Quaich for the Best Corps of Drums in the Novice/Juvenile category.

The top prize in the senior's category was won by the Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Pipe Band.

The event saw bands from Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew, being pitted against competition from all over the country.

Renfrewshire's Provost Celia Lawson said, "The Pipe Band competition was a fabulous day which was very well attended. The Royal Pipe Band Association was delighted with the venue which provided the friends and relatives who had come to support the competitors with shopping opportunities and the chance to get a bite to eat.

"County Square is an ideal entertainment venue and this competition builds on Paisley's growing reputation for staging high quality events. We're looking forward to making next year's competition bigger and better and continuing Paisley and Renfrewshire's strong musical tradition."

The event was supported by the Paisley Vision Board.
