A new hotline has been launched to help the one in three Renfrewshire residents who have money worries. The 'now let's talk money Renfrewshire' helpline points people towards the advice and information they need to make the most of their income and manage their debts.
Councillor Allan Noon, Renfrewshire Council's finance spokesperson, launched the new helpline number on Friday 25 January in the council's Customer Contact Centre.
Councillor Noon said: "More than a third of Renfrewshire's residents feel they are getting into difficulties managing their money or are just getting by. Over 27,000 residents are considered to be income deprived."
"Coping with money worries can be very stressful. Managing bills and debts can sometimes seem impossible. But ignoring financial problems only makes them worse, particularly when so much really effective help is available."
"The hotline points people towards the help on offer including Renfrewshire Council's Advice Works, our Housing and Council Tax Benefit teams, the Renfrewshire Wide Credit Union, the Citizens' Advice Bureau and specialist cash advisors for cancer sufferers. These teams have an impressive track record of helping people increase their income and manage their debts."
In 2006/07, Renfrewshire's Financial Inclusion Fund helped 1,244 clients, gave benefits' advice to 549 people, brought nearly £1million worth of debt under managed payment agreements and generated over £660,000 worth of extra income and tax credits for Renfrewshire residents.
The 'now let’s talk money Renfrewshire' number is 0141 842 4433. Help and advice is also available online at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/nltm.
