Motorists travelling into Paisley are set to gain better access to the town centre under new proposals launched by Renfrewshire Council.
Causeyside Street, St Mirin Street and Gauze Street will be opened up to all traffic.
The move comes after councillors considered the findings of a major transport study commissioned by the Paisley Vision Board (which brings together business and local authority representatives to take forward the regeneration of Paisley).
The measures to open up access for motorists will be promoted through an experimental traffic order and the effects of the scheme will be evaluated over an 18-month period.
Other measures include Central Way becoming one way eastbound (for use by buses and taxis only), a bus lane being installed on part of Old Sneddon Street, and traffic signals being installed at the junction of Smithhills Street and Gauze Street.
"All of us involved in taking forward the Paisley Town Centre Action Plan have always made clear that improving transport access to the town centre is a high priority" said Renfrewshire Council leader Derek Mackay.
"The current plans are only the first phase of what we intend to be a wide-ranging series of medium and long term proposals which will also look at bus services, parking and cycle access to the town centre. The regeneration of Paisley will require a wide-ranging programme which involves not only business development but improvements in transport, the environment, tourism and residential development."
"Renfrewshire Council has made this one of our key priorities and we are already delivering on practical proposals which will boost the appeal of the town centre as a place to do business, live in and work."
