Paisley gets new nature reserve

Durrockstock Park
An afternoon of fun-filled activities is being lined up to celebrate the news that Paisley has a new nature reserve.

An area of Durrockstock Park in Foxbar has been formally declared as a Local Nature Reserve, making it Paisley's third. The move recognises that a large area of the park is rich in plant and wildlife, particularly its plantation woodland and open water.

Declaring this area as a Local Nature Reserve will ensure this area is protected and will provide a place for environmental education. A special afternoon of fun and entertainment is being held in the park on Sunday 27 April to mark the occasion.

Puppet shows, woodland trails, games and competitions, all with an environmental theme, will take place between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Local community group Friends of Foxbar are teaming up with Renfrewshire Council and Renfrewshire Green Gym to celebrate the event. They will be in the park throughout the afternoon offering lots of activities, including making bird and bat boxes.

Councillor Marie McGurk, convenor of Renfrewshire Council's environment and infrastructure board, said: "Durrockstock Park is a special local greenspace on the doorstep of schools and homes, where everyone can learn about and become more involved in their natural heritage. Hopefully, this day will provide an opportunity for the community to really enjoy the benefits that the park has to offer."

Pupils from Gleniffer High School have also been doing their bit to promote Paisleys newest nature reserve by taking part in an art competition. Second year pupils took part in the competition to design a new logo for Durrockstock Park to go with its new status. The winning design by Jordan Pearson will be unveiled at the launch and the winners will be presented with their prizes.

Councillor Lorraine Cameron, convener of Renfrewshire Council's education policy board, said: "I am thrilled that local children have become so involved with Durrockstock Park already. Choosing the winner was a very difficult decision as the entries were fabulous. It is obvious that the children are very aware of this beautiful area and that was shown in their artwork. This is really encouraging and I am hopeful that they will continue to be as interested in the years to come in caring for their local nature reserve."
