Adult learners become published authors

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2008 > May

A group of adult learners from Renfrewshire are about to become published authors.

Write on Buddies is a group of adults who come together every week to work on their literacy skills by doing creative writing. As part of Adult Learners Week, the group will celebrate the launch of their book, entitled "Write on Buddies: a collection of stories, poems and reminiscence", at an event in Moorpark Youth Centre on Monday 19 May. The book has been published with funding from Learning Connections, the Scottish Government Learners' Publication Fund.

The group has been meeting at Southend Action Centre and Moorpark Youth Centre in Renfrew for two years as part of Renfrewshire Libraries adult literacies project, funded by Renfrewshire Literacies Partnership and the Scottish Arts Council.

Councillor Eileen McCartin, convener of Renfrewshire Council's community and family care policy board said: "Approximately one in five adults in Scotland have some problems with reading, writing or numbers. The Write on Buddies group is just one of a number of different projects across Renfrewshire providing opportunities for Renfrewshire adults to improve their literacies. It is very encouraging that this group has had its work published."
