Renfrewshire Libraries will host an awards event at Ferguslie Park Library on Thursday 26 June to celebrate the participation of Renfrewshire adult learners in the Six Book Challenge.

The Six Book Challenge is a national event, launched in conjunction with the national year of reading in 2008 and designed to encourage people to join their local library, read six books and build up their confidence and enjoyment in reading.

The Six Book Challenge has been happening in libraries and community centres around Renfrewshire since January 2008. Participants were encouraged to read at least 6 books between January and June, keeping a diary of their reading and writing book reviews. Many participants used 'Quick Reads', short books written by popular authors which guarantee a great read but are more accessible for people who are not confident readers.

The project has been a great success in Renfrewshire, with many people getting into reading for the first time. A new Quick Reads book group, Book Buddies, will be starting at Ferguslie Park Library in the autumn.

Scottish author Janet Paisley will be appearing at Ferguslie Park library on June 26 as part of the awards event. Adult learners will pick up awards to celebrate their achievements in completing the Six Book Challenge and will be entered into a prize draw for free tickets for shows at Paisley Arts Centre, courtesy of Renfrewshire Arts and Museums. Participants will also have their names entered into a national prize draw for a VIP trip to London to see a West End show, courtesy of Costa Book Awards.

Councillor Eileen McCartin, convenor of Renfrewshire Council's community and family care policy board, said: "Research shows that life chances are improved by reading, so I am delighted that Renfrewshire Libraries are actively supporting this national literacy scheme for adults."

If you'd like to know more about the Six Book Challenge or the Book Buddies group, contact Andrew Givan, lifelong learning librarian on 0141 887 6404 or find out more at the libraries section.
