Renfrewshire leaders praise airport heroes

Home > Services > Council and government > Council information, performance and statistics > News - release archive

Leading Renfrewshire council representatives have joined in the praise for all those involved in responding to the recent airport terror attack at Glasgow.

Renfrewshire’s provost Celia Lawson and council leader Derek MacKay joined other councillors, council staff and representatives from the NHS, police, fire and ambulance services, and voluntary and charitable organisations at a reception held in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The event was hosted by first minister Alex Salmond who told the 500 guests that the reception would have been held in Paisley Town Hall "if it had been big enough to accommodate those attending."

Renfrewshire’s provost Celia Lawson said: "It was quite moving to see the dedication and commitment of so many Renfrewshire people honoured in this way.

"Whether people responded as individuals or members of organisations, they were a credit to Renfrewshire. I had the opportunity to meet with many of them at the reception and learn about their involvement, and thank them on behalf of the people of Renfrewshire."

Renfrewshire council leader Derek MacKay said: "One of the most impressive things arising out of the incident was the speed at which the airport reopened. In general, everyone could see that Renfrewshire was open for business and that was a reassuring message at a very difficult time.

"I’d like to add my congratulations to the council staff and everyone who played their part in helping people in so many ways at a very difficult time."
