Council tenants to benefit from investment

Renfrewshire's 13,000 council housing tenants are set to benefit from the latest stage of a five-year £138million investment programme as part of the council's housing budget for 2012-13.

The third year of the council's 'Delivering Housing Improvements' programme to modernise council housing to meet the Scottish Housing Quality Standard by 2015 will see £34.8m invested by the council over the next 12 months.

Among the main work this year will be over £12milion on external improvements to the fabric of buildings and also a series of environmental improvements.

Pilot programmes on external improvements in Kirklandeuk and Glenburn have already proved successful and are helping deliver heating benefits through better thermal efficiency. There will be further investment in new kitchens, rewiring and heating systems.

Councillor Kenny MacLaren, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Housing and Community Safety Policy Board, said: "Renfrewshire's programme to transform the quality of council housing is delivering investment of over £2m per month for our tenants.

"We are well on course to complete one of the biggest ever investments in Renfrewshire let alone in council housing.

"The benefits of local jobs and apprenticeships for those carrying out the programme are also continuing.

"Our business plan remains on course but in these uncertain financial times we need to ensure that the programme continues to be delivered. A previously agreed rent increase of 4.5% will be implemented.

"We were quite open that tenants would have to play their part in funding the modernisation programme but they can see that the below inflation increase is directly funding improvements to their homes.

"Finally, I am delighted to be the first Housing Convener in Renfrewshire for a generation who can say that the council is preparing to build new council housing – with 37 new council homes planned to be built in Paisley."
